Many times when you are walking down the aisle in the super market you will see merchandise with the labels “low-fat”, “gluten-free”, and “multigrain”. These labels are often misleading and trick the consumer into thinking that the products themselves are in fact healthy and therefore a good purchase to make. While this can be true in certain situations there are plenty of foods that are commonly thought to be healthy that in fact really aren’t. Here are just a few.
1. Granola

Many times granola is made using oils therefore increasing the fat content and decreasing the nutritional value. In addition, granola is often cram-packed full of sugar and preservatives. Before stocking up on your favorite brand take a look at the label and make sure you aren’t sabotaging your diet.
2. Flavored Yogurt
Although flavored yogurt is quite tasty it is also fully loaded with sugar. Just one small container of a popular brand contained 19 grams of the sweet stuff. Opt for a plain yogurt and mix in fresh fruit for a more nutritious choice.
3. Enhanced Water

One of the biggest diet downfalls occurs when you drink your calories. There are multiple enhanced water products on the market promoting the vitamins and minerals found in their beverage. What you may not realize is how much sugar is also in there. Instead, naturally infuse your water with lemon, grapefruit, raspberry, or cucumber and get your vitamins and minerals naturally through a balanced diet.
4. Smoothies
Especially in the summer months when the weather is warmer a smoothie sounds like a great snack, however, the calorie content is often that of a meal.
5. Frozen Diet Meals
While the low calorie content of these meals might be enticing the extremely high sodium content is not. Sodium causes water retention and bloating and is also associated with a higher risk for heart disease. These meals are also highly processed and full of ingredients you may not be able to pronounce.
6. Protein Bars
Most protein bars are really just fancy candy bars. They are loaded with sugar and are high in calories.
There are many different “healthy foods” that really aren’t. It is our job to be knowledgeable about these things and choose the true healthier choice!
